美国人环境观念的转变和随后所兴起的进步主义时期资源保护运动表明：近些年来有些学者倡导的所谓“西方文化中人与自然对立、东方文化是人与自然和谐”的理念是站不住脚的。（53）其实无论是西方基督教文化，还是东方文化，其中都包含着“征服自然”和“与自然和谐相处”两种可能的趋势，会发展出多种人与自然关系的模式。西方文化中一直存在着阿卡迪亚传统，东方文化中也不乏人与自然对抗的事例，简单地以与自然对立或和谐来区分东西方文化是不恰当的。
    美国人环境观念的转变对于我国当前的环境保护运动具有重要的借鉴意义。这些年来我国在环境保护方面一直举步维艰、收效不大的原因除了政策执行不力以外，很重要的一个原因就是民众的环境保护意识薄弱。要改变这种状况，环境保护理念的推广与环境保护政策的执行同样重要。只有让社会各阶层都认识到环境保护的迫切性和必要性，树立保护环境为荣、破坏环境为耻的主流价值观念，民间力量与政府执行相互配合，才有望遏制住环境不断恶化的趋势。
