Institute of Folklore and Cultural Anthropology of School of Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China 100875) Abstract: The present rural China shows two tendencies of social change. One is that villagers leave their hometowns and land, leading to the disappearance or hollow phenomenon of villages, the other is that villagers work in agriculture, industry, and tourism in the market environment, forcing villages to become companies by making use of land appreciation dividend. The countryside is faced with the possibility of the breaking of socio-cultural ties and life and cultural tradition formed through hundreds of thousands of years, and consequently at present many villages attach high importance to the recording of the histories of villages and individuals in their cultural development, reflecting a kind of bottom-up spirit of cultural self-consciousness. Being a discipline of sensing life, Folklore should participate in, promote, and strengthen this kind of cultural practice characteristic of “village memory” through such communicative ways as field interviews, and so on. It is discovered that this kind of cultural practice is likely to mutually promote the development of rural tourism and this mutual promotion will move on, thereby bringing positive strength of emotion to the whole society, and this in turn requires tourism to shoulder the responsibility of strengthening cultural exchange between rural and urban areas.
